The Waterphone

The Waterphone
The Waterphone is a drum-shaped musical instrument that’s played with a bow. Invented by Richard Waters (hence the name), the Waterphone is frequently used in film and TV soundtracks because of its otherworldly sound. It’s even been used to call whales…

UPDATE: Actually, Richard Waters notes (in the comments) that the Waterphone is not eponymously named, rather it’s so named because the instrument contains water.

The Insect War

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 | music | No Comments

Have pity for the poor residents of Tuscarora, Nevada. The Wall Street Journal reports how every year they have to battle an invasion of 2″ long crickets. Most years it’s just an invasion. Some years it’s a plague. However, one resident discovered a secret weapon hidden in an old newspaper article, a Chinese Gong. Updated for our age, it’s become Heavy Metal. Read more at the Journal’s website.
Update: It doesn’t work with cockroaches. I tried.

Bob Dylan’s Most Excellent Website

Bob Dylan's Website

I’m not a big fan of Dylan. I like plenty of his tracks, but I’m just not that big a fan. However, I am a fan of his website. You can listen to any song from any album, and the interface is way cool. It’s what a musician’s website should be like. Bob Dylan fans, rejoice.

Lucky Voice Karaoke

Saturday, November 29th, 2008 | music | No Comments

I recently stumbled across Lucky Voice, which is a web site which provides a personalized karaoke service. You register a username, build a song-list, and start singing. Your web-browser will take up the full screen, the song begin, and the words appear. The song quality is high, and the variety of songs is probably better than the choice down at your local pub. I was amazed to find songs by Muse, The Stereophonics, etc. The music and graphics are streamed rather than downloaded, and I found my 4 MB connection was well up to the job. Lucky Voice is still in beta, but I’m enjoying it.

Guitar God

Monday, October 6th, 2008 | music | No Comments

There are guitar players, and guitar gods. Andy McKee is in the latter category. What I wouldn’t give to be able to play like that.

He has a series of videos where he demonstrates his unique style. The music is beautiful. Do yourself a favor and check it out. I guarantee you’ll watch all the videos.
