The Waterphone
Monday, May 11th, 2009 | music

The Waterphone is a drum-shaped musical instrument that’s played with a bow. Invented by Richard Waters (hence the name), the Waterphone is frequently used in film and TV soundtracks because of its otherworldly sound. It’s even been used to call whales…

UPDATE: Actually, Richard Waters notes (in the comments) that the Waterphone is not eponymously named, rather it’s so named because the instrument contains water.

The statement that the Waterphone was named after Richard Waters is incorrect as had that been the case it would have been call a “Watersphone”.
Instead it was named the Waterphone because it contains water in the resonator which allows the echos and tone bending.
